There is more to a movie than the characters and plot. The music is just as important because it helps set the mood of a scene. It makes a sad moment even sadder, and an action scene more exciting.
Romantic films often have the best soundtracks, such as "Titanic." Some of the best romantic movie soundtracks have songs that keep you singing for days after watching the movie. Sometimes you listen to the soundtrack more often than watch the movie -- the songs are just that good.
One great thing about the "Moulin Rouge" soundtrack is that it takes classic songs and turns them into something different, and it actually works. Baz Luhrman's movie has beautiful, vibrant music to match the beautiful and vibrant colors in the film. You can see that giant elephant in your mind every time you listen to "Elephant Love Medley." Nowhere else will you hear "Roxanne" by The Police done as an epic tango. "Moulin Rouge" turned an already great song into a theatrical masterpiece.
'P.S. I Love You'
"P.S. I Love You" is a depressing movie, yes, but a great one. It helps that Gerard Butler is in it, but the music also plays a big role. Without the great songs, the movie might not have been nearly as good. The soundtrack, unfortunately, does not have every song sung by Gerard Butler and Hilary Swank, but it does have many of the best songs in existence.
"If I Ever leave this World Alive" has some of the best lyrics of any song, and is worth purchasing the soundtrack album for that reason alone. Add in Nellie McKay's soulful "P.S. I Love You" and The Pogues' "Love You to the End," and you're happy. If you want to complete the soundtrack, download "The Galway Girl" by Steve Earle and "Fairytale of New York" by The Pogues.
"Once" is a collaborative effort between Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova. Together, they make movie music magic. The movie itself is simple and beautiful. It is one of those rare times when you might watch the movie once, but listen to the soundtrack every day. The music is the movie and provides the plot. So, why watch the movie?
'Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge'
Picking just one romantic Bollywood soundtrack is nearly impossible. India's answer to Tinsel Town could have a list of its own.
"Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge" makes this list because it is a great introduction to Bollywood. It is a classic in India. The songs play a big part in the movie, as they do in all Bollywood films. This soundtrack has a mix of sweet love songs and fun dance numbers. All of them are catchy. They will have you singing or humming along, even if you don't understand Hindi.
'West Side Story'
Soundtracks to movie musicals always do well because the music is so important to the film. It might seem difficult to choose one romantic movie musical soundtrack as the best, but "West Side Story" wins. When you think of romantic songs, sad songs, or dance hits in a musical, you immediately think of "West Side Story." While other movie musicals have some great songs, not one has affected as many hearts as this, the movie made Shakespeare cool.
'Across the Universe'
"Across the Universe" takes songs by The Beatles and uses them to tell a story. Like "Once," the music is the plot, making the soundtrack almost more important than the movie itself. Like "Moulin Rouge," this soundtrack takes classic songs and makes them into something new, making "Across the Universe" a triple threat with The Beatles, musical plot, and reworked classic songs.
