If there is one thing a movie fan needs when Christmas gets to be too much to handle, it is a good horror movie. What is even better than that is a good Christmas horror movie to help you shake off those holiday doldrums. From axe-wielding Santas to an evil snowman, there is plenty to choose from in a holiday horror tale. Here are some of the best holiday movies for the horror fan in anyone.
An interesting bit of trivia about this Christmas horror movie is that Bob Clark directs it: the same man who also directed the beloved "A Christmas Story." "Black Christmas" is a Canadian slasher that caused quite a stir when it came out, even predating "Halloween," the slasher movie that started the craze, by four years. It is also interesting to know that the original script for "Halloween" was supposed to be a sequel to " Black Christmas " until John Carpenter took it in a different direction.
In the movie, Margot Kidder ("Superman") stars as a sorority girl in a house that finds itself terrorized by a slasher killer over Christmas break. John Saxon portrays a police officer investigating the murders here, years before he took on the role of an officer in the slasher film "A Nightmare on Elm Street." The movie received a remake in 2006, but it is nowhere near as iconic as the original.
"Silent Night, Deadly Night"
During the 1980s, there was a major outcry against slasher movies. Many films found themselves banned in the U.K., including "The Evil Dead" and "Braindead," while in America slashers were heavily censored. One movie that caused an uproar in America was the 1984 slasher film "Silent Night, Deadly Night." The biggest complaints were from parents' groups that objected to Santa Claus depicted as a killer.
This was all ridiculous since Santa was not the killer; it was instead a deranged man dressed up as Santa Claus who was killing people. Plus, the movie was a heavy R-rated horror film, so kids should not have been subjected to it anyway.
"Silent Night, Deadly Night" is about a guy named Billy who saw his parents murdered by a man dressed as Santa as a child, and remains traumatized years later. When a man dressed as Santa begins killing people for being naughty, it is clear who the number one suspect is.
With a couple of classic films on this list, here is a brand new Christmas-themed horror film to check out. Released in 2010, this Finnish horror flick is based on a 2003 short film called "Rare Exports Inc." In "Rare Exports," a group of reindeer herders accidentally digs up the sacred grave of a wild Santa Claus. The movie takes on the myth that Santa is not a saint who rewards the good children but a group of evil creatures that punish those who have been naughty. What results is one of the most original horror films in years.
