A couple of weeks ago, Ben Affleck emerged as Warner Brothers's first choice to helm their Justice League film; however, it looks like the studio will have to move down on their wishlist, as Affleck has indicated that he's not working on the project.
In an interview with 24 Hours Vancouver, Affleck denied any involvement with the superhero project. He says that "one of the problems with entertainment websites is that they need to fill pages" and that this is "how rumors get started." While Justice League "sounds exciting" to the actor/director, it's "something [he's] not working on."
This isn't a huge surprise; even when he was announced as the studio's front-runner, a lot of industry sentiment indicated that he wouldn't be interested in tackling a project like this. In addition, his attachment to "The Stand" (also for Warner Brothers) may be a factor, as that will be an ambitious two-part film that he's been developing for a while.
As such, Warner Brothers will have to begin seeking other candidates. In fact, if a report from Moviehole is any indication, it's already found their next choice: Lana and Andy Wachowski, the siblings who delivered "The Matrix," "Speed Racer," and the upcoming "Cloud Atlas" for the studio. While "Speed Racer" was a commercial disappointment, the studio is apparently very pleased with what it's seen from "Cloud Atlas," which is due for release in October.
However, even the Wachowskis aren't a sure thing to take the gig, as they've also been prepping "Jupiter Ascending" as their next film after "Cloud Atlas." Another big-budget sci-fi film, "Ascending" already has Channing Tatum and Mila Kunis attached as the leads, and it could be the first part of a new trilogy.
Will Warner Brothers be able to change the Wachowski's course by dangling Justice League in front of them? It'll be worth keeping an eye on in the coming weeks, as Warner Brothers has to be very keen about getting this project officially on the move given the way Marvel manages to dominate headlines on a weekly basis these days.
