'21 Jump Street' to premiere as SXSW centerpiece

NEW YORK (AP) — The upcoming remaking of "21 Jump Street" will premiere as the centerpiece of Austin's South by Southwest Film Conference and Festival.

The action-comedy stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in a big screen version of the 1980s Johnny Depp TV series. It will screen March 12 at SXSW, which runs March 9-17.

The conference also announced its closing film will be "Big Easy Express," a documentary about a group of touring folk bands including Mumford & Sons.

SXSW earlier announced that "The Cabin in the Woods," an anticipated horror film co-written by Joss Whedon, will open the festival.

On Wednesday, the festival announced its full slate of 130 features at SXSW 2012. Those were selected from a record 1,957 feature-length submissions.

Can't call this a remake because it looks NOTHING like the original television series. The public already has a negative perception about police so lets give them even more fuel for the fire and portray police officers as being stupid flunkies. Nice job Hollywood in the message you're sending to our youth.

WHAT a piece of crap this will be. It's got NOTHING to do with 21 Jump Street, and they've reduced it to a stupid horny guy comedy with two losers as the main characters. How PATHETIC. I was looking forward to it when I first heard it was being made into a movie because I had envisioned it as something along the lines of the "Miami Vice" movie, which was treated with some respect. Sadly, they've peed all over the original series and wasted the chance to make a really good movie based on a cutting-edge drama that actually had some relevant lessons to be learned from it. This is just a mockery of the original and has absolutely NOTHING to do with the t.v. series beyond the name. It's more like an "American Pie" remake. Steven J. Cannell must be spinning in his grave...

Bad enough that Jump Street will bare no resemblance to the TV show. Worse that Jonah Hill is behind it (and in it). TOTAL DEATH that they let Channing Tatum anyhwere NEAR thescript at all! The only thing that could be more lifeless than Channing Tatum would be a movie starring Channing Tatum and the Twilight girl.

This is just another travesty remake of an old TV show that was so much superior to this tripe. I wish people would stop taking my favorite old TV dramas and turning them into horrible movie comedies (I Spy, Starsky & Hutch and this one) or taking old TV comedies that were funny and turning them into movie comedies that aren't funny (Get Smart, The Beverly Hillbillies).

Yeah, it's a shame they couldn't have given this one the same treatment they did when they made "Miami Vice" into a movie; that actually had balls & did the series justice. This thing will suck harder than Lindsay Lohan suck-starting a Harley-Davidson...

It looks terrible, not saying the original was great but was still better than this polished turd they are calling " 21 Jump Street"

I would never consider this a remake. It will never add up to the original televison series.

This movie is a total BOMB.. what a waste of money.. waste of time.. and has nothing to do with 21 JUmp street. It was a good show in its time. If todays generation wants to see it then instead of paying $11.00 for a crapy movie instead of spending money and buying the series or see if there are a few episodes on You Tube. remeber this: U get what you paid for. This is going to be next to the Green Hornet bomb.

Let's see bad movie remakes of average to good TV shows. Dukes of Hazzard, S.W.A.T., Starsky & Hutch, Land of the Lost, Lost in Space, now 21 Jump Street. What's next a movie remake of Land of the Giants, Sliders, Space 1999?
