So incredibly timely in the wake of Prop Hate's passing in CA.
Penn and Franco are both Oscar worthy in Gus Van Sant's finest film. Emile Hisch, Denis O'Hare, and Josh Brolin are also excellent. Milk's fate is revealed in the first minutes, and the rest of the movie is told in flashbacks. Gus van Sant uses some interesting visuals to portray San Francisco in the 1970s - particularly in a moment when Hirsch's character is hitting the phones to organize local homosexuals.
Milk is very well written. He is no deity. He is blunt, witty, crass, and very sexual. He flirts mercilessly - he is a real gay american being depicted honestly in a film. I have no doubt that just as Harvey Milk's life and career was a landmark in the gay rights movement, so will this film be. Easily the best film of 2008 so far.
In recent weeks, members of the african american community have argued that their civil rights struggle cannot be compared to homosexuals' since they have not been the victims of widespread violence. Those people should see this film and remember the way police nationwide treated homosexuals. Hopefully, Milk will spark a renewed movement for equal rights in this country. |
