Witty for grown ups, action packed for kids

I got to go to a sneak preview of this movie last night, and I was pleasantly surprised. I'm a twentysomething w/o kids, and I hate slapstick humor- so I'm probably not the target audience here. There was enough of the slapstick and physical humor to keep the kiddies entertained, but much like Shrek, there was enough wit and subtle humor to keep the adults (like me) entertained and glad to be along for the ride. Hank Azaria stole the show and had me laughing out loud at his character's whiny antics. His range from booming commands to lispy complaints showcased his understated acting talent. Ben Stiller does better with the slapstick humor (literally, in a dragged-out but still funny scene of him being slapped by 2 monkeys). Amy Adams does a remarkable Amelia Earhart, a real role model for girls.
This lighthearted comedy is not going to win awards anytime soon, but it's definitely worth seeing, especially if you like history/pop culture references. It's a movie that a family could enjoy together but that has broad appeal to other audiences as well. Two thumbs up! |
