The first movie caught my interest via its trailer and Carla Gugino being in it. I didn't get around to watching it in the end. Still, all you need is the concept that there was this night guard at a museum where the exhibits came to life, and you're pretty much caught up. What happened since is briefly explained in this movie. I think this movie is about as critic-proof as you can get, but here's my take as succinctly as possible.
It's fun. Not fantastic or truly great, but enjoyably entertainingly fun if your expectations aren't that high and you just want to unwind with something inoffensive.
The production values and effects are pretty cool. Seems like these techs are working really hard for every movie that's coming out this season.
The actors are generally good with two exceptions. Hank Azaria steals every scene he's in as Kahmunrah, and as traditionally with the Simpson's voice actor, he provides vocals for two other characters. Amy Adams is the other stand-out who's quite charming. She's really on a roll.
Old jokes done in new ways are still old jokes, although they do provide the laughs instead of groans.
Muppet cameos are always great (see Kermit in Mr. Mangorium's Wonder Emporium), especially facing off with Kahmunrah.
Solid rousing adventure music courtesy of Alan Silvestri.
If you liked the first one, it's more of the same (I guess) making it a "like it or hate it" deal. |
