Good action movie, but something was missing

So I went to see this last night at a pre-release screening as a guest of my brother in law who was involved with the filming of it. I have never had any contact with the film industry so it was cool to see a movie early as an average joe.
Coming into this movie, I was really excited for it. I loved T2 and was hoping Salvation would be as good as T2 after T3 was somewhat disappointing. Salvation was probably somewhere between the 2 movies. The action is great. There is no doubt lots of money went into the special effects. For the most part, they were pretty awesome, although a terminator having a fist fight with John Connor seems a little unlikely considering all the other terminators had machine guns attached to their arms.
I thought the acting was actually pretty good. The best performance, for me, was given by Sam Worthington, who plays Marcus Wright. Without giving away any plot points, I will say he definitely puts out the best perfomance as an actor, and I expect this role will lead to many future leading roles. I'd go see a movie jsut to see him again.
The story plot itself is pretty basic. I really felt like there wasn't the depth of the plot that there was in T2. The ending felt a little contrived and was obviously set up for future movies in the franchise. After the movie was over, I was like...that's it? The movie would have really improved by extending it 30 minutes to devlop the plot a little better as there was plenty of action. I also think when the DVD comes out, there might be an extended version as the one scene I was really looking for from previews on TV wasn't even in the movie. That scene where the terminator/machine comes out of the water behind christian bale was cut - I was highly disappointed that a cool scene from the preview was cut.
I think had this movie come out on it's own, more people would like it better, but it is a victim of the success of the terminator franchise in that it is going to be compared to the best of the franchise, T2, and it wasn't as good as that. That said, go see it in the theater. The special effects are outstanding and should be seen on the big screen. |
