This isn't a "Kids Movie"....It's for everyone

Pixar is stubborn. They absolutely refuse with everything they are and have to make a bad movie. I have loved Pixar Animation Studios' movies ever since I was a very young child. I enjoyed the animation and the movies' "Kid-Friendliness". It wasn't until about the time that "The Incredibles" came out that I was old enough to appreciate the true art that Pixar has created, and this film is no exception to that art.
Last year I was mesmerised by "Wall-E". It was funny, animated and directed well, with the most amazingly written story that a movie had had up until that time. It reflected very well Andrew Stanton's 15-year work on the script. Walking into the movie theatre to see "Up" I expected another great Pixar movie that Disney would steal all the credit for (as they always do to Pixar) but I did not think that it could beat "Wall-E". Boy, I couldn't have been wronger. Not only did "Up" beat "Wall-E", It also beat all the movies I've seen so far this year. After seeing this work of art I can honestly and whole-heartedly say that as of now, it is the single best movie that I have ever seen in my life.
Disney/Pixar's "Up" begins with Carl Fredrickson as a young child were he meets the kind-of-cooky little girl named Ellie. Carl isn't much of a talker around Ellie (but he sure blushes a lot)but Ellie talks up a storm. However, the two have one thing in common...their love for adventure and their dream to go to Paradise Falls, a lost world in South America. Carl promises Ellie that one day he will take her there and many years down the road the two get married. Through a montaugue with no dialougue that children won't get but teens and adults will appreciate, we see Carl and Ellie happily grow old together, and right when Carl gets the tickets to finally go to Paradise Falls, Ellie dies leaving Carl all alone with his dreams crushed.
At age 78 Carl Fredrickson's house is surrounded by construction and he is being forced into a retirement home......and when he is gone they will destroy his house. Carl sees one way to escape and save the house that he had promised Ellie would one day reside next to Paradise Falls, and he takes advantage of it. He ties billions of balloons to the top of his house and heads toward Paradise Falls. But one thing he didn't account for was Russel, an 8-year-old Wilderness Explorer in need of his Helping-The-Elderly Badge who stows away in the flying house.
I'm not going to tell you if Carl and Russel reach Paradise Falls or not, but I will tell you that their journey results in cool action sequences, amazing scenery, hilarious comedy, and tears that rolled down mine and almost every one else in the theatre's cheeks.
"Up" is rated PG for a reason, and even though Pixar once again shows us that a cartoon can appeal to teens and adults without all the bad language and sexually explicit content, there are some scary action sequences and peril. My six-year-old sister was scared enough to hold on really tightly to Mom's arm at one point. About half-way through the movie I thought that I was going to write "don't bring small children", but then I saw this kid sitting next to me who was about 5. Even though he obviously didn't understand the deep meaning that this movie has, during the action sequences he cheered and wooped and hollared. At first I was annoyed and wished his mother would shut him up, but then I thought that if director Pete Doctor saw this kid, he would be proud that his movie caused someone to actually cheer out loud.
I would reccomend this movie to all ages and allthough it deals with things that young kids won't get such as death, mis-cariages, and orphaned children, they will still enjoy this film. Adults and teens will love the hilarious comedy and heart-warming drama while kids will like the animation and Dug, the cute dog.
This movie is for EVERYONE, and not just kids and people with kids. This is NOT just a "Kids Movie", and if from this review you are not convinced that this is the best movie ever created, than go see it and find out for yourself the joys of "Up". Its worth every penny and more, and believe me....you won't regret it. |
