“The Proposal” is a laugh out loud comedy about a snobbish, career driven book editor in New York (Sandra Bullock) that is facing a career ending “deportation” back to Canada. She proposes marriage to her assistant, Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) who loathes her, to save her job and from being deported. In return, she promises to help Andrew publish his book, for this great personal sacrifice.
This movie had my wife and I laughing consistently with the chaos that ensues, since “the proposal”, or agreement was made, including a suspicious government immigration employee that threatens Andrew with jail time and the weekend visit for Andrew’s “Grammy’s 90th Birthday” celebration in Alaska (very funny “Meet The Parents” situations).
Betty White plays the “Grammy” and she was terrifically funny! Bullock, Reynolds, Craig T. Nelson (Andrew’s Dad) and Mary Steenburgen (Andrew’s Mom) were all excellent, too!
This movie had more laughs than the trailers and commercials that have promoted the film. It was refreshing that this movie delivered even more fun than expected (based solely on the commercials and trailers). This was a great “escape” movie from everyday life. If you like to laugh (lots) and want a feel good movie, then this film is a must see!
My wife and I can’t remember when we laughed so hard and often throughout one movie. This movie was very well written and directed. It also had much more than just laughs. |
