What was that?

I have never been the most positive thinker on the planet, but I went into seeing this film with so much excitement that I cried when the lights dimmed. Yes, I was that girl who held a scarf over her mouth when it began, but by the end of the first five minutes I was unsure as to what I'd gotten myself into. Having been a devoted "Twilight" fan from the very beginning, before Stephenie Meyer even decided upon making a sequel to her saga, I must speak my mind about my thorough disappointment.

Firstly to address one major issue that bothered me, as well as those I came with, the acting. Kristen Stewart has never been the shining starlet they've made her out to be, and I was prepared for her to be awful. Though, I wasn't quite sure as to why they'd let her look like she was being stabbed countless times over in every scene. Sure, Hardwicke's directing is questionable at best, but can someone not speak up about how god awful she is? I mean, I understand that they were trying to make her seem different, but she's certainly not relatable at best. Though, I found joy in her falling, even if it was just to see her fall and nothing more. Robert Pattinson tried, and I have a feeling his career might be short lived after this tragedy of a film. He's beautiful and has all of the requirements to be Edward. However, being an actor myself, you're only as good as who you're working with. The fact of the matter is, Edward and Bella had little to no chemistry. The fact that she also didn't have pants on during their 'slow kissing' scene took me off guard, though I assume that would be the only reason this film is rated PG-13.

This film was saved by highly amusing moments with Charlie. Bless you, Billy Burke for being so good at what Charlie does best. You were awkward and uncomfortable in all of the right ways. You were protective and my brother was cleaning his gun when my first boyfriend came to pick me up - thank you for making your scenes a bit easier to watch than some of the other painfully awkward scenes between the two star crossed lovers. Though I have a feeling Charlie's moments were supposed to hold humor, there were moments when everyone in the theater groaned and laughed at scenes that weren't supposed to be funny at all. Though, it was partly due to the out of context, straight from the book lines. Such as the lion and the lamb conversation. The crowd laughed at it, and I was among them. This is not the only one instance where a direct quote is drawn from the book, and while I respect their decision to do this so they don't get torn to shreds by raving fan girls, the effect failed horribly. Falling short would be a compliment to the screenplay of this film.

The effects gave little to the film, and it didn't exactly make Kristen Stewart look attractive in the placid lighting. Everything was obviously cheaply done, though I understand that "Twilight" had very little budget. Maybe next time Edward won't just float above the ground he's "running" on. Perhaps he'll actually be on the ground and not looking so outrageously fake it made everyone laugh.. again.

Sure, the books are wonderful and I am fully prepared to read my book after I write this to forget the awful joke it's become. People don't find it funny because it is funny, they find it funny because that's all they can do. It's all I can seem to do when I think of the film I've been so looking forward to for months and even years. Perhaps others will like it, but from someone who has been so dedicated to this series for so long, it seems like someone is making fun of my best friend. It's a joke and that's the saddest part of all.

What was that?
Awful.
That's what it was.
Just, awful.
