Having read the books in the last month, I'm somewhat new to the Twilight series; but nonetheless I have the addiction. I was happy about the casting of Edward and Bella. I figured Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart were very fitting. After seeing the movie, I can't fault them completely, I blame the script more. The dialogue was terrible, even the lines taken directly from the book felt out of place. It felt like the lines were forced in to make the fans happy, not necessarily to move the storyline.
I know movies need to cut books down to make them fit better for a visual media, but there were some scenes that got left out and/or changed that I felt truly needed to be there or left like the book's. Ex: the restaurant scene with the vampire conversation should have stayed the same, it was a pivotal moment. Also the ending with the prom scene, that should have stayed the same. And Bella and Charlie eating at the diner all the time?! The books spent a lot of time having Bella making Charlie dinner, so we know the girl can cook. Also the kitchen cabinets needed to be yellow. (I know nitpicky, but it's such a minor thing that could have easily been changed.)
The vampires never looked beautiful to me, their makeup was too caked I could see cracking on some of their faces. That bothered me all throughout the movie. While I can't complain about the fast movements and Edward's glisting skin, since how else would they really show that? I can complain about Pattinson's chest hair showing through the top of his shirt, Edward is supposed to be smooth, marble-like. Would it have killed him to wax? And for Jasper...I have nothing nice to say about him. He looked alien-like. As for Rosalie, let's just say a recast would help.
I'm sure it's hard to make such a beloved book into a movie, but this just felt to rushed, to forced. I've read it only took six weeks to write the screenplay, maybe they should have taken a bit more time.
On the plus side, James was fantastic. Everything I believed him to be and more. And the climax was great. The minor characters of Jessica, Angela and Mike were spot on. I was leery of Jacob until he smiled, then I could easily see him as Bella's sunshine.
Not everything a Twlight fan could hope for, but it has promise. Maybe the next movies can grow upon where this one started.
