This is a summer fun movie that ordinarily I wouldn't review, except at one point, I thought...this movie could have been great. It could have been great if the movie were called simply "Beth Cooper" and if it were entirely about her and her life, not as an object in the leading character's life. The lead is the typical summer movie middle class teen (because the assumption is that the is the audience...although in my theatre the audience seemed to be 80 percent female...maybe nascent Beth Coopers). That guy is always the lead...whining about getting into college, all the bullies who keep him from getting the girl...etc, etc...no doubt he'll grow up someday to become an functionary in a Democrat administration...but gee whiz, I'd wish they'd give us a break from the guy.
Beth Cooper would be about the sassy, sweet, crazy but all the time self-aware girl-woman who knows that these are the best years for her and that she will live every second, enjoy every moment for herself. That is the movie crying to escape from this movie. That is the movie I wish I had seen. |
