If only the producers and director of Max Payne had had the sense to emulate the game's pacing and the way Max's story was interwoven with it, this would have easily been a B+ or A- movie. They didn't, and it's not. Which is a shame, because Mark Wahlburg does a very good job of portraying Max's the spirtual desolation that's destroying him. Mila Kunis does a good turn as Mona Sax, and the supporting cast do well for themselves also. The movie's visuals are dark, forbidding, and desolate; perfectly framing Max's despair and longing for rejoining his slain wife and child. The botched screenplay makes the first half of the movie WAY too tedious, and curiously lacking in the frantic action that characterised both installments of the MP games. The directing is botched as well as it did nothing to correct the pacing deficiencies of the screenplay. Worth a watch, or you can easily wait till it hits the bargain bin at WalMart. |
