In most cases, if you'e read the novel the movie will be disappointing; it just a given.
Abigail Breslin and Sofia Vasseliea deserve Oscars for their moving, heartwarmaing performances and IMHO if they had kept true to the novel's their acting would not have been better. I love Cameron Diaz's portrayal of the mother would stop at nothing to keep her daugher alive. Jason Patric gives a good preformance as a father and husband who is struggling to keep his family together and that includes his son, Jesse played by Evan Ellingson. He's caughte n the middle between his wife and daughters and no matter what he choice he makes, in the end he looses. They needed to explore Jesse's story more, even if the novie had to be longer.
I read a critic's review that said that this movie is basically a pro-life vs pro-choice battle; if you're for life Anna gives her kidney and of you're choice she wins her lawsuit; but I don't think it can be summed up as simply as that. Am I the only person who has read the book that think's it is wrong to have a child to save another child? A child that was genetically-engineered to be a "perfect" match for her sister so that she can be used to harvest, tissue, cells, blood and now organs?
Most viewers are angry that the book ending was changed for the movie, I APPLAUDE it. Finally, Anna wins and gets to live, instead of dying to save her sister's life again. I am not heartless, if it could have worked out that both daughters could have lived in either the book or movie, I would have liked it; but it didn't happen. The novel lets Kate live and go onto a happy life. The movie lets Anna live. Anna was a bright child and I am sure that after going through everything she did, she would have led a wonderful life; perhaps as a children's right lawyer/advocate even.
