The composition (musically and visually) in this movie is so creative and beautiful, but not without a point. It is artistic without being distant.
Although the subject matter (the homeless and the inability of the California state government to do anything about it and the fragility of the human mind) is difficult, the representation of each is socially enlightening.
Having someone in the family who is has psychologically imbalanced, being able to understand what it would be like to hear voices really touched me deeply. But the audience need not have a personal attachment to an real person with this condition, the superb acting and representation of these real people allows the audience to garner an understanding. Being able to experience the phenomenon of hear voices with the character allows the audience to really understand his point of view and to see why he would have an issue with being inside. Although Foxx and Downey Jr. provide superb performances, allowing the audience to be favorable towards the main characters, the performance from the lesser characters is also amazing.
I absolutely hated the cellist that came to tutor Foxx's character, so the actor gave an excellent performance. The character was so alienated from reality that it was offensive. One of the best composed scenes is when the cellist call's Robert Downey Jr.'s character about arranging a performance for Anthony Eyres Jr.'s character. He is shot standing on some type of ladder behind the fence on the phone at his church. In this particular shot and all of the shots we see him in, he is enclosed or alienated from the world of all of the other characters. He is unaware of reality and he's arrogant because of it. While all of the real life and actual truth is portrayed as taking place out in the streets, he is never scene out in open spaces (only in the apartment, behind a church wall or at the Disney concert hall). I think his character gives much commentary on the views that most people would have on the issues raised in the movie.
There are so many issues raised in the movie, that one might come away a little depressed. But the depression won't come from an overdramatic storyline, on the contrary, the depression comes from the extreme realism and truth about our current society and how those who are valued least in our society are treated...
Enough Rambling...GO SEE IT!
