Unlike the miserable portrayal of schizophrenia in "A Beautiful Mind," this film does not shy away from portraying this terrible disease in all its scary reality. I suspect the reason it is not getting "A"'s from everyone is that in this movie the schizophrenia is so ugly--just like the real disease. In addition, the unflinching portrayal of public mental health services is so accurate that it hurts.
Additionally, one cannot help but admire the portrayal of homelessness; while a bit exaggerated, it protrays homeless people as real human beings rather than caricatures, and brilliantly puts actual homeless people into the roles of homeless people.
I guess I am sorry that movies like "A Beautiful Mind," a joke from a doctor's point of view, gets such acclaim, while a realistic movie which shows you the hard reality of schizophrenia just scares the critics off. |
