Though there are a few characters missing in this film from the trilogy, the dynamic between Viktor, Lucian, and Sonja is a superb performance.

Bill Nighy portrays the extremely REMOTE and abominably SELFISH Viktor. After witnessing Kate Beckinsale's Selene in the last two films, it is easy to say Rhona Mitra did a good job or at least helped us see why Selene reminded Vikor of Sonja. Michael Sheen's acting is also remarkable - he kept the vengeful Lucian on top of his game despite the 6 year difference in production of films 1 & 3 (rare in sequels).

Don't forget the badass lycan, Raze, played by Kevin Grevioux. In the comic book, Lucian originally chose Raze to take part of his tribe after witnessing how powerful he was in human form. Even though the films storyline isn't exactly the same as it is in the comic books, the film makes a big deal of this essential point. This is also crucial for experiencing Raze's mystique.

Steven Mackintosh brings back the Archivist, Tanis who has a couple of fairly humorous scenes such as when he tries to save all of the ancient vampire scrolls. Fans of Bill Nighy's overwhelming anger will be laughing with him for a moment in this film.

As a sequel, this film is a joy because it keep the characters solid as we remembered them in the first film. It is rare to see a sequel that has so many characters brought back with the SAME actors.

My only problem with this film is that Kraven is not in it. This means that Kraven did not get first hand intelligence of Sonjas death and this bugs me...terribly.

Overall, I think this film is excellent...i.e. as a sequel. It does not bother to explain things for audiences who haven't seen the last two films and I think it doesn't need to. This keeps the pace going for the plot. But any novice of Wiseman's Underworld will walk away from this film with...lets say, "problems".

If they do a fourth, I hope we get to see Pierce, Taylor, Kraven, and at least some of William (before he turned into Werewolf for all time) and more of Corvinus, Marcus, and Amelia (who was slightly more convincing as a warrior elder in the 2nd film) as well as the other Underworld favorites in this 3rd chapter.
