I saw "Burnt by the Sun" years ago. When I saw "12" yesterday, I did not know that these two movies are related. I don't think this movie will be well received in the US because most of the audience in the US do not know the history of Russia well enough to understand this movie.
Russians went through the fights within their people during the communist party period. It demonstrated very well in "Burnt by the Sun". Today, Russians are still struggling from the invasion of Capitalism, the collapse of Nationlism and the tension from the racism.
This movie uses 12 juries to tell the "Today" problems in Russia. The movie definitely an anti-war movie. Russians are trying to find themselves in the new era while some tried to hold on the past and some just want to forget the past.
The trial is just the top layer of the cake. The real contents of this movie is about Russians, the human beings, and where shall they go. How will they survive in this changing period and find themselves in the future.
At the end of the movie, it tells us the real identity of one of the juries and pave the way for the sequel. It is a very smart, well done movie but the audience need a lot of patient to absorb this movie.
I think some of the translations in this movie do not make sense at all. It definitely hurts the movie. |
