This movie is basically a deliberate, slow-moving character study of a man retiring after 40 years as a railroad engineer (who drives the trains), and how he adapts to his new life without schedules to meet and set routines to follow. It's a beautifully-acted, sweet story set in snowy, frigid Norway. The mood is dark (most of the story happens at night) and the main character a dour, shy single 67-year old man, but the ending is rewarding and uplifting. If you liked "Kitchen Stories" a few years ago (I loved it), this ha a similar tone (by the same writer/director) but less humor, yet there is a similar strain of heartwarming authenticity to it all. If you like action movies, stay away--but if you like a good, well-told story with a definite arc of character development & change, this is a rewarding film to see. |
