A mediocre story with one hilarious actor

So here is a movie I never expected to enjoy as much as I did, but that just goes to show: Don't judge a movie by its trailer. The story revolves around an absolute a** of a guy who find himself, after a mishap during a colonoscopy, able to see and speak to the dead who have not found rest and have not been able to move on. The story is funny, rude, and sensitive at just the right moments but when it comes right down to it, the only reason to see this movie is for Ricky Gervais. Gervais is practically begging the audience to hate him as he creates a character who hates people (both living and dead) but his humor and wit is so dead on (pardon the pun) that it is impossible to dislike him. The rest of the cast balances the movie well but as Gervais' character comes to change his perspectives, the audience is left not knowing if they really want him to end up with the girl or not. It is a brilliantly played role by Ricky Gervais and I am convinced that he is the only one who could have pulled off this mediocre story to be so entertaining. With that said, writers John Kamp and David Koepp pulled off a hilarious comedy considering they are taking a drastic turn from their normal screenplays like Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park or Secret Window. Overall rating: B+
