AMERICAN DREAMS

This is a superb documentary that centers around five high school kids in Warsaw, Indiana. One of them is Miss Popularity, one of them is a Dorky Band Geek, one of them is a Basketball Star, one of them is an Absolute Mess, and one of them is an Ordinary Guy. Sound like The Breakfast Club? Well think of this as that movie, deconstructed with real kids and real problems such as parents who expect too much and apply way too much pressure, or parents who don't support their kids at all: one parent actually tells her daughter, "You're not special." !!!!!? What could have been an annoying movie actually provides a lot of insight into the lives of teens, and yes, you will find yourself identifying with at least one of them (I was the band geek!) Heartbreaking and precocious all in one breath! |
