I thought I knew a lot about Hunter S Thompson and the endeavours and adventures of his life. However, this documentary really shed light on many parts of Hunter's life that I really didn't know about. Of course it covered his time with the Hell's Angels the impact that had on him. And it followed him while covering the 1972 presidential election and his hatred for Nixon, while essentially campaigning for George McGovern. The doc. also covered his run for Pitkin County sherriff. The footage uncovered in this documentary was nothing less than astounding. I certainly did not expect to see much in the way of archived footage from HST in his younger years. However this doc didn't lack for any of it. It really provided us with view into HST's existance as a journalist, writer, gun lover, advocate for civil rights, and as a man. It also unmasked the "Dr Gonzo" persona and revealed to us the guy-behind-the-guy.
The first hand accounts in this doc make this even more of a cherished enjoyment. Included are interviews from both of his wives, his son Juan, Ralph Steadman, Tim Crouse, Pat Buchanan, George McGovern and many more that escape my mind at the moment.
This was truly a delight to see. |
