I enjoyed the 1st hour of the movie. But, like many "thriller" movies nowadays, the last 30 mins. sad to say, ruined the whole thing. Many people left the theater shaking their heads.
Too bad...it opened very well, EXACTLY like Cloverfield--no titles, no graphics, no credits--just some 1st-person homevideo-like footage meant for you to get to know the characters. Eventually you get to the story where it gets exciting, creepy, thrilling all that junk. All good.
But this is why I disliked it:
1) After the first hour, they had NOWHERE to go with the film. You know everything. All that's left to do is the same "I'm scared-youre scared-lets get outta here-but not without him/her-ahhh im being attacked-now im dead" over and over and over again. The last 30 mins beats you over the head to where they could have ended it midway and it'd be the same.
2) The joy of survival/thriller movies is watching what people will do to try and SURVIVE crazy situations, and NOT act like you're starring in a survival/thriller film, where, instead of running from a blood thirsty zombie, you for some reason want to get a closer look.
3) They totally ABUSED the 1st person cinematic style the last 30 mins. The blair witch angle was way too obvious, the night vision shot was thrown in for no reason whatsoever except to add the "we see what the characters can't" feel, and the last scene was 100% contrived and you totally lose the "documentary" feel of it.
Bottom line: does the movie thrill you? Yes a few times...if anything go watch it for that. But does it do anything else? No. Do not get your hopes up. |
