This movie had big shoes to fill in my imagination. From the time I was 16 to the time I was 25 these people were a part of my life. I knew every episode, had every moment of Mulder and Scully's relationship memorized. I mourned them when they were gone.
That is why I must say after my reunion with these beautiful characters that I come away longing for something that was missing. That is not to say that the acting was not excellent, because it was. And it wasn't that I hoped for something more between Mulder and Scully. I am so happy for them that they are together and they are somewhat at peace at the moment and trying to be a family to each other. They deserve that. Though a separation would have provided more of that spark of tension that we love about them, I was satisfied regardless. I hope this is not the end of their story.
I suppose what I miss is the element of paranormal. It lacked that spark of otherworldiness that I've come to expect from Chris Carter and his gang. I wanted the aliens and the spaceship and the cigarette smoking man and that fire that burns inside Mulder to get at those truths that no one else wants to contemplate.
And you know, I never thought that those things were why I watched X-files in the first place. I thought I only cared about Mulder and Scully's relationship.
Maybe that's what Chris Carter's point was. Maybe he wanted us to see that we do want those things, and that Mulder and Scully's fire is fueled by their need to know those things.
So to sum up, I feel like a got a taste of something that I want more of. I need one more movie. I need some kind of big, mythology infested angsty end. I know they can't go on doing this forever. I just need one more really good chapter to Mulder and Scully's life.
It can't end like this. |
