I had my reservations about this movie based on the trailer. So when my teen daughter begged me to go, I decided to go with her. The movie had the feel of Juno, but darker and with different humor. I found myself liking the movie more than I expected. For example, I thought it might promote teen drinking, but it turned out that the only character who drank alcohol clearly had a problem, while Nick and Nora stated they didn't drink. Nora was, instead, always having to take care of this drunk friend and deal with the friend's bad decisions.
The movie highlighted the struggles of being a teen, of being in love with someone who doesn't love you back, making difficult decisions, and sometimes making the right ones. Nick and Nora were portrayed as very flawed and conflicted, as most people are. I actually found this refreshing.
I didn't really see the point of the gay band members, and I could have done without the scene where Nora has an orgasm (though you could only hear the sound and see nothing going on, I felt it really did cheapen the sweetness of the movie).
Overall, I think the movie creates an opportunity to open up dialog with teens about choices and making good decisions. It isn't perfect, but it is a sweet and likable movie that I actually wouldn't mind seeing again. |
