Every once in a while, a movie comes along that doesn't fit the framework of what we come to expect in a movie. There's romantic-comedy, there's edgy/indie, there's modern-day fairy tale...but not until this one have I seen them all rolled up together. Like "August Rush" meets "Revolutionary Road" meets "Lars and the Real Girl" meets... And it's ultimately rewarding if one can get past the idea that "wait, this is edgy realism, but that shouldn't be happening, that *couldn't* happen..." and suspend disbelief long enough to catch some classic, subtle humor, the expose on human foibles, suffering, and love -first of one's self, and then others. |
