Discovery Channel comes at you in 3-D

I have two basic perspectives on this movie: a traditional review and then a commentary on the pricing of movies.
I have three children, ages 7, 9 and 11, and they requested to go see this movie. The movie focuses upon three dolphin-like prehistoric creatures who swim in an ocean that covers most of current North America. The graphics are very good and similar to those you have seen in other shows on the Discovery, Learning and PBS channels. The trick here is that it is in 3-D. The special effect are strong, and our kids really enjoyed the well done 3-D imagery. The story line toggles between modern day man discovering the remains of various sea creatures and the lives of the creatures themselves. It moves at a fast pace, and it keeps everyone entertained without ever becoming slow. Well done.
Now for the "but" part...
The cost for this movie was more than a normal movie despite the fact that it is only 40 minutes long. We went to the theater thinking it would be cheaper... Boy, was I wrong. For a family of five (2 adults, 3 children), we spent $45 on tickets. That works out to less than $1 per minute. It was a good movie, but not that good. It also was not much better than a Discovery show, and only then because of the 3-D effects. I felt ripped off and other families there expressed the same opinion. In short, wait for the DVD or just tell your kids it is no different than other t.v. shows about the same things. It really isn't any better. |
