Yes, those on the other side of the German WWII question were also people, conflicted and torn just like all victims of any war. More than Jews, gypsies, communists and homo-sexuals were damaged outrageously by Hitler's underlings, not unlike Bush underlings went wild at Abu Ghrab in our names as well.
But this was not a woman gone wild madness and hatred. She was a woman trapped by equally hideous circumstances in a world at war gone mad. She equally had the right to survive, just like Jews had rights achingly betrayed as well.
Yes, it is an indirect re-telling of the War and the Holocaust in the background, but more importantly it is recognition that always, always, always war is awful for everyone.
And we all survive and look for beauty in the horror any way we can. Few Germans killed and never on their home turf, - that was farmed out to Poland so there is some factual ambiguity in this story.
See it because it is rare to get such a moving character study with no real story yet it moves and goes everywhere as it unfolds. Winslet is nuanced and superb. She chews up this role which may never have reached the heights it did when it was in her very capable hands. |
