The brilliant independent film of the year.

There's always at least one. Juno, Superbad, Little Miss Sunshine, Napolean Dynamite, etc. This is, as of March, the one to see. Realistic characters, dialog, and situations blend smoothly into a study of how people are without the Hollywoodisms to jerk you out of the slice of life illusion. Some were expecting something more like Superbad, which was enjoyed by certain people for the very excesses it made fun of, the irony of which is lost on them. So they expected Adventureland to have all those crass, American-Pie like moments which it didn't. Wah. Instead here is a different, if not better film, about people a little older and wiser than the goofs in Superbad, with their own set of issues. Adventureland is not only fun, but a (sometimes) badly needed relationship guidepost to young adults. This joins a small but growing list of films that are the antithesis of the plethora of cruel, uncomfortable comedies being cranked out by the studios in recent years. |
