A critical eye will miss the point of campy fun.

Yes, there are some major plot gaps, lots of gore and it cannot be taken seriously. Still, I'd rather re-watch this than Rocky Horror Picture Show any day, and I'm guessing this will get it a minor cult status amongst goths, and anything that makes goths go against their protocol and actually smile must be powerfully goofy indeed.
Notably good performance from Buffy's Anthony Head makes up for the inclusion of P.Hilton, who largely plays a vapid spoilt heiress who is misguidedly trying to launch a singing career and is a near-constant embarrassment to her family, in which sense I suppose she could accordingly use "role research for method acting" as an excuse for the past few years of her insufferable existence.
It appears from reading up on it that it was made on a miniscule budget by people who were true believers in it, and as such I think it is aimed squarely at a subcultural audience that the critics aren't members of, or it is trying to go too many different directions of weird and fetishistic at once to be in any single genre for which a basis of comparison is established. Neither of these are justification for the poor reviews it's gotten when there were people were cheering and clapping in the (admittedly only 2/3 full) cinema. If you're intrigued by it on iO9 or youtube, see it for yourself then make up your own mind. |
