I just read a lot of the reviews. I loved this tiny little gem. I became so engaged that I didn't want it to end. I loved her roommate Zooey, her glum sister Suzie, the Flamenco dance teacher, her brother-in-law who like any good guy just wants to play with his Play station!
Some people in the reviews were annoyed by Poppy...But I enjoyed her. Maybe because I am a glass half full type too. But it was refreshing to see someone happy for a change and not ready to murder someone! My only qibble would be the part about the homeless man. I am a woman and I wouldn't go into that type of area in the daylight let alone the dark! In the film if it had been daytime it would have been more believable to me. As it was it felt like it didn't belong with the rest of the film and too "goody goody"...We already know she is a trusting soul. That scene was just too unbelievable. Other than that I loved it. I knew she and the social worker would hit it off because I was a teacher too but they fit well together. It felt believable to me. I liked her relationship with best friend Zooey. It felt real to me. Like a slice of life. I laughed alot and the theater was packed and everyone loved it. People even clapped at the end. But, of course, I do live in Santa Cruz where this film could have been filmed as she would have fit right in! Which is why I love Santa Cruz! Our "adult bookstore" looks like a costume store. Not until you get to the back do you realize what it it. It is a Pollyanna version of an "adult bookstore" which I find enchanting like this film! Highly recommended. If you like this film try "The L-Shaped Room" from the 60's or 70's with Leslie Caron. Another British gem that is hard to forget and you love the people and hate it to end.
