Lovely but cynical
by James (movies profile)

I like Herzog's films and his constant themes of man versus nature even though he always says nature will always prevail over man's foolishness. But his distain over man is so biased from the outset of this movie. He starts off by stating he didn't want to go in the first place (guess the checks from the Discovery Channel changed his mind). As usual, the cinematography is impressive, but is neutralized by Herzog's commentary. Essentially he says that Antarctica is a fascinating place and the people who work there ae very interesting, but it doesn't mean squat because mankind is doomed and we're all gonna die. Make you wonder why he even bothered with the film in the first place. |
