Let's make one thing abundantly clear: this movie is not meant to be "Citizen Kane". That said, can we please stop criticizing it for all the so-called things it never meant to be in the first place. Why critics--both amateur and professional--see fit to measure a comedy with a drama yardstick is beyond comprehension. FYI comedies are not required to be elegant, verbose or philosophical. They are however, required to make an audience laugh and have a good time. That's the bar, the measure, the standard: HAVING FUN!

Now that we've established what a comedy should be critiqued on, let's give credit where credit is due...This movie is FUNNY! Ferrell and Reilly are masters of this genre. Nay, they are virtuosos of teenage-boy, gross-out, and potty humor. If you enjoyed their comedic antics in "Talladega Nights", "Step Brothers" should make you laugh-out-loud and then some. This time around the duo portray Brennan (Ferrell) and Dale (Reilly); two forty-year-old, never do well (and never left home) "boys" brought together by their parents' marriage. The newly minted step-brothers immediately begin a hilarious rivalry, with ever-escalating pranks. However, when forced to confront Brennan's obnoxious younger brother and imminent eviction from their cushy home, the duo form an alliance to protect their slacker way of life.

The film is rated R and it is potty humor, so if you're easily offended by the f bomb or testicle jokes, stay away! If you don't want your kids asking about "ball fro" don't buy them the ticket. Otherwise, gather your popcorn and drink, relax into your seat and enjoy the Ferrell-Reily express. Oh, and for all those concerned about losing their intelligentsia cred by attending this movie...Please remember to silence Plato, Socrates and Orson Welles for the duration of this picture. Enjoy!
