Futurama fans rejoice, Futurama is back on the air. Well, sort of, and not so fast. While this movie starts out promising enough, poking fun at Fox ala Family Guy for canceling them, it quickly devolves into a convoluted story about time travel.
Not that I don't think a comedy about time travel can't be done, it's just that Futurama is not the correct vehicle. Falling somewhere on the funny scale between King of the Hill and Spongebob Squarepants, Futurama was just something I'd watch while on, not look forward to. As such,a convoluted story simply filled with name dropping and cameos by this animated team simply doesn't cut it.
Even the hardcore fans have mixed reviews at best about this movie. I think it was too daring a project for a comeback effort for Matt Groening and crew. While the Simpsons movie suffered a bit from trying to be too adult, Futurama suffers from not expanding outside it's fan base, and just presenting a hackneyed plot that we've all seen before on the regular episodes. The next Futurama movie had better be superior, or this show will remain in the TV graveyard where it still lingers. |
