I am a girl and I obviously love female empowerment and all of that, but I am also a purist when it comes to remakes of classic movies. And this remake just doesn't deliver. For anyone who has never seen the original version you need to go out and rent or buy a copy because once you see that version, you'll be pissed that there is the watered down, "let's braid each other's hair" girl power kind of crap in this remake. I have girlfriends, I love to shop, i love to get my hair done, etc. But those are all supposed to be background scenarios, not something that all the women in the audience ooooo and ahhhhh over because they're doing on screen what we like to do in real life. The women is supposed to be about a woman who is destroyed by some home wrecker who stole her man, and she divorces him (which was actually something of a scandal in those days) and then the woman who has been destroyed by scandal finally gets the courage to fight for her man...particularly with "jungle red" claws. The women is supposed to be about social climbing, and how disposable relationships can be sometimes and how a man straying can actually lead the couple to realizing that they do love each other despite the mistakes that have been made. But too often movie studios figure that female audiences are so easily pleased that they just make anything and feed it to the masses. I could actually like this movie, if it wasn't a remake. But the fact that this modern day version ruins all that the original version brought to the table is unforgivable. |
