I could see how professional reviewers might rate this a C. But for pure entertainment we rarely agree and since Yahoo users gave it an A I took the kids to opening night. There were plenty of laughs, catchy music, great scenes like the El Dia de los Muertos parade, for everybody and it was a real G movie, not a pushing the borders like so many. We laughed hard enough that the kids said they wished we could see it again, so we stayed at the theatre and watched it a 2nd time.
I'm not sure kids would catch this theme but I liked that the stuck up female characters all came down to earth and appreciated the male characters. I had one pre-teen with me and I also liked how the lead female part went dancing with a boy she met but then sent him packing when the evening was over without even a kiss.
Jamie Lee Curtis - I wonder if that woman is as nice in person as she seems on film? What a genuine smile. George Lopez cracked me up with the Poppy voice - his voice is enough to make anybody smile. And Monty the Chihuahua with his speech on the chihuahua - very funny. My kids got up this morning and said No Fifi, no Foofoo, no Pooky etc. The bad guy and his Diablo dog - very stereotypical and perfect for kids movie. The characters of the conniving rat and his sidekick iguana were colorful additions.
All in all, if Disney keeps this up I might even start liking them again. Now get rid of Hannah Montana and a few other things. |
