Nothing heady... typical plot: spunky, talented heroine who's got to struggle in many arenas - multi-antagonists & triumph in the end... storyline? no way! acting? oh nooo. A fun visual feast of moves? HELL YEAH. Sure, there's some subtle racism, but this is Hollywood; no way is the young white male not going to completely run the show & get the girl eventually... This film wasn't deep enough to explore the complexities of each character, so in that respect it was very thick & clumsy... but the sheer very cool audio/visual of it all is worth at least 1 viewing [or maybe 2 to see the opening sequence again] and like I said, some character who could stomp it out w/ some flamenco or slither around doing some bellydance would have perfected this thing. |
