Attention:A PREMISE is NOT to be used as an EXCUSE

You can't use a premise as an excuse. That is the only thing this movie succeeds in doing, which, of course, is a failure. Here's the thing: I love Mark, Zooey, and John. I find M.'s movies interesting, if not more than a little disappointing since the Sixth Sense. But this movie made me honestly angry. The problem is that the use of the idea "It's just a natural phenomena that we will never be able to explain" is not that it's not new, it's not fresh, the problem isn't even that it isn't worth considering. The problem is that this movie uses this as a mask to conceal that M. had no idea what he was doing with this movie. Many will see this hoping for something like one of M.'s other movies. The unfortunate part is that all too many will walk away from this piece of hollow trash with the same defense of them watching that the movie had of itself: you can't explain it, it just happens, thank you for your 20 bucks and 2 hours. They will feel they are enlightened for appreciating a crappy movie much like people who saw A History of Violence felt. I can't appreciate this movie because it's transparent and flimsy, because the camera work is shoddy and the acting is sometimes a little bit corny, and the violence was so over-the-top it was almost comical (The guy starts the mower, zombie-like, lays down in front of it. We've seen people pick up guns from dead officers and shoot themselves...repeatedly. Please, M., don't insult our intelligence by insisting that we don't know where this is going. Get over yourself). Yeah, that's part of it, too: I'm insulted. I think, though, my wife said it best: "So...the real whispering or toxins in the wind...it was the movie, right? It makes you want to kill yourself for wasting your time and giving M. another chance?" Yes, sweetheart, yes it is.
