A zany western parody film that somewhat works
by Greg Linsun (movies profile) Jan 13, 2009
In order to truly appreciate this film one has to know two things: The first: Director Takeshi Miike is one of the wackiest directors out there today. and the second: This is meant to be FUNNY not serious. Sukiyaki Western Django is a wild film to say the least and at some points dives a little too far into the absurd but that isn't to say it doesn't retain the bizarre Takeshi Miike sense of humor. Anyone who's seen Kurosawa's Yojimbo or Leone's A Fistful of Dollars already knows the plot: A stranger comes into a corrupt town overwrought with two gangs. How does he plan to stop them? Work with both sides until chaos ensues. Though like in every film done by Miike, it has its own brand of wackiness some the humor is wasted on a bad English speaking cast. Some of the sets are outrageously fake but the action is funny and is laden with clever parodies of westerns. For Takeshi Miike fans, Sukiyaki Western Django may be worth a shot, for everyone else, watch Audition or The Happiness of the Katakuris before taking a shot at this.
