So far, the critics have entirely missed the boat here...I wonder if they even watched this movie! A humble plot, Unique cinematography, enveloping soundtracks, and absolutely brilliant acting combine for a very moving film. This film never goes hollywood, never expands beyond the realm of real life...it stays grounded in an authentic character study. If you liked 28 Days Later, take away all the excessive gore, mix in the pained, true-to-life romance from the Constant Gardner, and the brooding nature of Se7en, and you've got Blindness.
This film is not grotesque. It is "overly-violent" in the same manner as Se7en. There actually wasn't much explicit or gratuitous gore...just unique, brooding cinematography, and the SUGGESTION of what is happening, leaving the action to the viewer's imagination, which often paints a much darker and disturbing picture than any filmmaker can. Some of the scenarios are disturbing, but their presentation is far from over-the-top. The rape scene is almost entirely dark, you never get any gratuitous close-ups of gaping wounds or violence...just a hint...and this is what makes it sooooo scary!
I can understand discomfort with this film. Mereilles was SO brilliantly effective at capturing the emotional horror of such a terrifying and claustrophobic premise, that he makes the viewer feel as though they are knee-deep in it. Any true filmmaker or film enthusiast will relish this phenomenal accomplishment.
I know man of us would rather be told and shown what's happening, in lieu of actually FEELING it, so don't go to this film expecting the usual explicit gore, blatantly-obvious metaphors, or crystalline, cookie-cutter Hollywood ending with which we are relentlessly bludgeoned. Sometimes, it's better to have some confusion and openness within the plot. Do you REALLY want to have all the answers? Don't you want to identify with your characters a bit?
Let go and enjoy the ride it takes you on!
