First, I'd like to point out that there are at least THREE reviews on here under different names that match one another almost word for word - verbatim. Second, for the folks that claim this is a "historically inaccurate movie" --I have to ask: Where did you go to school to study this particular event in hitory? I happen to be pretty familiar with this particular time in history and found it very realistic to the point of Tom Cruise having the exact hair style of his very real character. This is not a story of fiction folks. It's not about making you feel good and thinking "Oh, maybe he'll pull it off". Duh. Hitler was not assisinated. These were very real men in very difficult times and trying to do a heroic task. Was their attempt to kill Hitler a self serving act? Perhaps. But let's not forget just how hard it was to get close to the man. Like Stalin, Adolf Hitler was insulated. His personal guards and the SS were not Boy Scouts. These were very bright, dedicated, well-trained, hard core Nazis. And, for those that have never been to Germany, you should know that where von Stauffenberg and his conspirators were shot remains to this day one of the few places of honor that people still gather in remembrance of a time when the Nazis ruled. It's not a time they cheris h and long to remeber. But, to this day, they do honor these conspirators and their sacrafice. Tom Cruise does not "make" this movie (although his lack of German accent does kinda spoil the illusion, but...) Nor does he destroy it. It is a great cast, a great story and very well done. I did not like MI: III specifically because of Cruise. However, I was captivated by Born on the 4th of July specifically because of Cruise's performance. Whether you like him or not does not change thge fact that he really is a bonafide movie star. So, if you like Cruise, you'll like this movie. It's a great Tom Cruise vehicle. But if you hate Cruise, you'll hate the movie. Persoanlly, I'm not a Cruise fan. But I respect the effort he and the crew have made in bringin gattention to this footnote, if not forgotten piece of history. But if you like movies, especially movies that attempt to make you think about what "could've been" - think about what you would have done if this was the United States and FDR was Hitler? Would you have the guts to even attempt this? Probably not. This is an amazing cast, a great director and a very real historical moment of time captured in a movie. It's not Schindler's List. It's not Exodus. It's not The Great Escape. But it is a very good movie and really is worth the admission. |
