Uneven, but redeeming

If you're a Woody Allen fan, you'll probably really enjoy this, but for me, I couldn't get past the feeling that the characters were at all times - with one notable exception - reading from a Woody Allen script. It's disturbing when you look at Scarlett Johansson and see Woody speaking, because the dialogue is so unmistakably his. I felt the "Vicki" character had nothing to say for herself, but followed Mr. Allen's every direction with none of her own input. (Although maybe that's what she's SUPPOSED to do). Too much wittiness by far, but with some life truths that leaked through in spite of the trademark humor. The passion of Penelope Cruz' character was the most real - and redeeming - element of the movie for me. Overall, while flawed, it was still worth the time and admission price. |
