I am a HUGE Palahniuk fan. I have read everything he has ever published and some stuff he has not. Choke has always been one of my favorite books and what I consider to be in the top 3 Palahniuk books along with Invisible monsters and Fight Club.
This movie gets the basic premise of the book across fairly well but I feel misses a lot of what I read Palahniuk for and that is the underlying commentary on the state of human nature. Perhaps I was expecting more and this was foolish but in my eyes this was another example of a brilliant commentary on humanity boiled down for mass consumption. What was left was a bit bland and un filling. I had to run home and start reading the book again.
If you have never read the book do it now! It’s one of those books that you will not be able to stop reading after the first page.
If you are reading this Mr. Palahniuk thanks for all the great work. Wish the movie could have included the man and the chestnuts! And more of the following.
“Drugs or overeating or alcohol or sex, it was all just another way to find peace. To escape what we know. Our education. Our bite of the apple.” CHUCK PALAHNIUK, Choke the book
Here, I'm supposed to tell her the truth. I admire addicts. In a world where everybody is waiting for some blind, random disaster or some sudden disease, the addict has the comfort of knowing what will most likely wait for him down the road. He's taken some control over his ultimate fate, and his addiction keeps the cause of his death from being a total surprise. In a way, being an addict is very proactive.
A good addiction takes the guesswork out of death. There is such a thing as planning your getaway. CHUCK PALAHNIUK, Choke the book |
