I was looking forward to seeing "City of Ember" after I had finished reading the book to my daughter two weeks ago. So the story was quite fresh in my mind. After watching the movie version of this film, Hollywood just doesn't get it when it comes to the screenplay and making it come close to the book version.
The first part of the movie ran somewhat close to the book. When they started to show the big bugs and roaming robots in the movie, it went bad. In the book, bugs were in the book but as small ones. The book never mentioned anything about robots. In the movie, it talks about how Lina's father died. The father did not die like that in the book. Nor did Lina's and Doon's fathers tried to find a way out of Ember. The way Lina and Doon found out wasn't even like that either.
The one scene that I was looking forward to see was when Doon and Lina make their escape from Ember. The movie wasn't even close in to the book.
I was truly disappoint in the visual effects when it came to the ride thru the tunnel. I felt like I was watching an episode of "Land of the Lost". I just they went over budget after casting Bill Murray and Tim Robbins in roles (which they both did really good).
It is assumed that Hollywood loves to make movies out of books. Sometimes they get it mostly right some of the time (ie: the Harry Potter series). But this book, Jeanne DuPrau should be visible upset and disappointed in how the studios and their screenwriters translated her book into film.
