Sometimes, readers expect more than they ought to, especially from book adaptations, even though we all know how Hollyweird slices and dices beautifully penned tomes with the finesse of Jason Vorhees. However, this was not the case with "City of Ember". As a teacher, and someone who has read all four books of Ember and followed Ms. Duprau's characters from their inception, Gil Kenan's film captures all the wonder and mystery of its inspiration. Sure there were things left out, but aren't their always (try reading Alex Garland's "The Beach" and then seeing THAT film), but Ember's overall positive feelings are right there alongside Tim Robbins and Bill Murray (who is perfectly suited as Mayor Cole). I look forward to the other books in this quadrilogy and congratulate Ms. Duprau, Walden media, and executive producer Tom Hanks on a job well done! |
