It's a nice kid-friendly apocalyptic yarn taken from Jeanne Duprau's New York Times Bestseller. The massive set is vividly done, and the actors do a respectful job in their roles. The characters themselves are those "let's do it and go on an amazing adventure" teens, a bit of an overused cliché, but hey, kid-friendly, remember?
The movie's primary objective, besides inventing this world, is to scoop out one barrel after another of adventuresome peril and action. So to satisfy this "peril" aspect, they stick in these cave monsters, not seen in the book...
The movie is called "The City of Ember" because the city itself is the prize jewel of the film. Taking it out leaves a rocky action film that crumbles under its weight. But leaving it in and looking at the film as a whole, it's pretty good.
And, at the very least, it's kid-friendly - your youngsters who loved the book will like this cinematic yarn a lot. This movie may not gleam as a masterpiece, but it sure does shimmer. |
