Before the Rains is a beautifully made, compelling film that is a must-see on the big screen. My favorite thing about the movie is the director's extraordinary ability to handle issues of race and culture in sensitive and enlightened way - and this really makes it a timeless movie with relevance in today's society. I also loved the exquisite cinematography and the complex character acting, esp by Rahul Bose and Linus Roache. Although the movie is set against the backdrop of colonialism, it is not an overtly political movie. Instead, the director focuses on the political implications of very personal and often misguided decisions that we make in life in the pursuit of our desires and ambitions. The director successfully avoids racial stereotyping, and works through layered character portrayals to examine how our actions are informed by power and culture. I left the movie theater feeling deeply moved with a deeper appreciation of the art of film-making.
