We've seen the play three times and had high hopes for the movie. Both the play and the movie do a great job of taking timeless ABBA tunes and bringing them to the next level. Where the play actors hit every note and are never seen out of makeup, the movie actors add a fantastic human element. Meryle Streep brings an intensity to the role of Donna that is a welcome surprise. I am not surprised by the low grade given the movie by critics. The same thing happened with Moulin Reuge. Some people just don't get musicals. All I know is that I have never been to a movie like this where the audience is laughing and singing on the way out of the theater. This movie may not be "Gone With The Wind", but it does exactly what it is supposed to do, make us feel good! |
