took my boys to see this movie because it looked so cute from the previews. Abigail Breslin always turns out a good movie. When we arrived at the movies on that hot summer day, there was a very long line...a long line of girls holding dolls!! I did not know that Kit was part of the American Girl goldmine. It did say in the title an American Girl Mystery, but I thought this was in the title just because she was American! How silly of me, obviously I do not have daughters. I had thoughts of turning around and going home, because there obviously was no other movie to see. We already wasted our time with Kung Fu Panda previously. I cannot even blog about that movie it was so beyond horrible and not even recommended for kids.
So we proceeded to go into the movie. The boys had no idea what I saw...the dolls. Well, the movie actually surprised me in many ways. It did not really have a "girl" theme. It was told from the point of view of Kit, but there were little boys in the movie and it was not gender specific. There were sincere underlying themes and it was nice to see Julia Ormond and Chris O'Donnell. The other surprise was that the movie had more adult themes about strife, loss, loneliness and theft. The movie was set during the Great Depression and at times was a little too sad for a child to see or understand completely. But for those of us who like to expose our kids to different emotions beyond Elmo and Tigger, this one hit it home. What I really liked about the movie was that is was sweet and wholesome. I prefer real-people kid movies than animation, because animation always has crass humor or underlying tones that you may not want to explain to your kids at this time.
I was also impressed with the cast, in addition to Chris and Julia was Stanley Tucci and Joan Cusack.
